My name is Al and I live in Boise Idaho USA. I am the president of the Idaho Gold Prospectors Association and have been for 5 years. Our club has almost 20 gold claims where members can go and hunt for gold and keep all they find. We use a variety of methods such as panning, dredging, sluicing and metal detecting.

No I have not heard of any gold discoveries in Mineral County, West Virginia. There is gold veins and out-croppings of gold and silver in West Virginia. Buchannon County and Upshur Counties have reports of gold veins running around and across the tops of caves and Jonathan Swift himself is believed to have mined gold in Buchannon County which is not to far from Mineral County. Discoveries of oil and gas were made early in the 1830 and 1840's in Mineral County, the surrounding areas should be right for the mining of gold and silver. There were a lot of Civil War activity in that area also. May be a cache or army payroll or maybe some Yankee Plunder hidden in the area.

Has anyone panned for gold near Charlottesville, Virginia? I have a gold pan that has about ten years of dust on it. Only used it one time testing. I hear a lot of creeks in and near Charlottesville had gold on them in the 1880's.
There is a man owns property near Floyd, Virginia. He pans the creek behind his home and was getting $4,000. a year in the late 70's and early 80's, today that would be about $12,000 to $15,000. With a dredge one could make enough to live on?

;D Depending on what you mean, "near Charlottesville"; when I was Administrator at Buckingham Correctional Institute (Prison), in Dillwyn, Va. (about 30 miles south of Ch'ville on Rt. 20), there was/is a road called GOLD MINE ROAD. COULDN'T find the mine, tho; did research of the area history, and it was the BIGGEST G.M. in Viginia @ 1840's... in 1849, EVERYBODY went WEST to California. Nearby is SLATE Mountain on Rt. 15, going SOUTH to Farmville, Va. LAST I heard... pp were STILL finding GOLD; just not as much.

;D I did MY research "in the field", talking to pp. then; also, reading Buckingham County history, etc. back then, when I had time (@ 20 years ago...).

Thanks rebel, I have all of the gold, silver and iron mines layed out on topo map. I thought seeing how the gold mines and silver lined up would help me to find an area where they haven't mined. I haven't did anything with the map yet. I do know the White Hall Mine on White Hall Creek was mined up until the time of the Civil War then opened a small time after the war and then abandoned. While they were sinking a shaft down about forty to sixty-five feet they found one cubit yard that had over $260,000. worth of gold and at that time gold was only about $22 or $26 an ounce. I still believe there is gold to be found in this area. I may check it out this summer with my gold topo map?

;D Yeah beale; I remember reading about the "Gold Belt" that ran from Orange County, Va. down to Roanoke Valley or something, I THINK along the east side of the SNP & BRP. It may be on your "Topo". Wikipedia had a WONDERFUL "writeup" on GOLD MINING IN VIRGINIA, with a list of G.M., including Buckingham County, Va. Gold Mines (FOUR, I think), and a "link" to state of Virginia Gold & Mineralogy Dept. or something... they even had a VERY nice map of Gold Mines... HH & Good Luck.

I did not get my maps from them, rebel. I made my own grid maps so I could see how the gold ran and at what elevations. That way I could go to near that elevation in a straight line and open up my own gold mine. I don't like purchasing maps, I make my own. I have all of the gold mines, silver mines and iron mines located. I also have a topomap of all the iron mines in and around Montvale. I didn't purchase it but I did get it from the Mines Dept.
