For the past few years, I have been following, investigating and searching for a treasure thought to have been found by a hermit that lived in Devils Canyon in Franklin Co Arkansas. Its a wonderful story. I am a writer by heart and when I started writing this story it was because I write about local history and old murders. I didn't put a lot of stock into the truth of the "treasure story" part but by the time the book was done, I was a true believer. I would like to run down a brief summary of this story and see if anyone that I have not already interviewed, may have heard or know anything about it.
The story is about Andy Doss, the son of a man that worked in the Lost Louisiana Mine of Dr. Tobb Hill in the late 1800s. Dr Tobe Hill was searching for the lost Spanish treasures. In the Cass community there are petroglyphs and carvings that the University of Arkansas have deemed to be Spanish.
Andy became interested in locating the lost treasure because of his dad having worked in the mines for Dr. Hill and Andy spent his entire adult life searching for this treasure. It was told by people in the community that Andy was bring out old gold coins and selling them to a man from Oklahoma City that came every few months. Andy never had a job and after the visit from this man, Andy would have rolls of money in his pocket. Andy told family members that he had a treasure cave but would only bring out a little at a time as he thought there was a curse on it and he was very superstitious. He was murdered in 1966 by family members wanting the gold coins. There are many old timers that have spent many years searching for this "treasure cave" but Andy would only give them hints over the year. There are turtle rocks that are 20 feet in ht. There is told of carvings on a bluff in the bottom of Devils Canyon that Andy used dynamite to clear away after he found the treasure, he didn't want anyone else to find what he found and he claimed to have finally solved it by these carvings. There is evidence that the bluff was dynamited in the 1950s.
Shortly before he was murdered, Andy told a gentleman that "All those years, I searched on the wrong side of the mountain". He had dug for years at a location that we have found, thanks to an older gentleman that had gone with Andy to the first site when this man was very young. We have not entered very far into the location due to cave-ins. We do not think this is the final location due to the statement he made about digging all those years on the wrong side. Now if I can master posting pictures, I will begin doing that. I will post a few and before I spend a lot of time doing that, I will just post a few and if anyone is interested, then I can post more. Thanks so much.
Ok I can't quite figure out how to post the pic but here is a link to the opening. therushfamily.info/mambots/content/plugin_jw_sig/showthumb.php?img=canyon1/andys%20mine.jpg&width=200&height=200&quality=80
