I am using an older Fisher Labs model 1270 metal detector. It also has a rather heavy search coil. It seems to work fine but I am wondering about its capabilities. To what depth will it detect metals? I am sure the size of the object will make depth capabilities vary. What is the general "range" of this unit such as coins to larger pieces of metals? I have the operating manual but it silent on those specs.
Thanks, Don

Probably about 8 inches on a coin depending on the type of mineralized soil. But it should go deeper in sand. You have one of the better older detectors. I have a 1265 Fisher that i keep just to use in the "pay to enter" Club and competetion hunts.

Thanks, I really appreciate the help. I am glad to hear it is decent unit.
I am looking in limestone and some silt stone. There is iron but it is 50 feet lower in the bedrock. I have not dug yet, but there is several objects that appear to be 12 to 18 inches in length. How deep will it go on a large object? What I am looking for is an old trash filled in sinkhole. I am assuming farmers threw their trash in it prior to filling with topsoil.

Turn the discrimination knob down to zero and the sensitivity as high as you can go without interference and if it's like my 1265 pull the knob out for extra depth. It should get down there really deep on a junk pile also you might want to use headphones. Keep the coil on the ground while swinging not up in the air hope this helps. Maybe be a little trouble but you could bury some junk out in the garden and do a test.

From what i've learned and seen Minelab probably has the best metal detectors for depth and all around use on the market although some are very expensive! Some other great detectors like Fisher Whites Garrett and Tesoro but Minelab beats them all on depth!
