I believe it's a septarian nodule. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ConcretionThe crystals on the inside are probably calcite and interestingly you might find that it's fluorescent under a shortwave (black light) fluorescent light source too. For more info, check out Mindat.org The forums there may shed some more light on it's origin and ID. Check out the Identity Help section ( www.mindat.org/msgboard-11.html ) where you can leave a message and post a pic to help with your samples ID. I hope that helps.

Looks like what I've always known as a quartzite pebble... A "cryptocrystalline quartz" rock composed of many tiny quartz crystals too small to be seen by the naked eye. In monetary terms it is probably quite worthless but if you (personally) find it somewhat attractive, then it's worth is obviously immaterial! Don't take my word for it though, ask the experts at Mindat.org They have a wonderful forum for questions such as this. Head for the Mineral ID section! > www.mindat.org/msgboard-11.htmlThanks for visiting this forum though, I hope you find the answer you were looking for!

I agree, although the pic seems to focus more on the background than the sample it does appear to be a grossular garnet (to my eye at least). You may want to head over to Mindat.org and check out the forum there, where you'll find a more dedicated group of people who will take great pleasure in helping you with your ID. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Hello everybody; I figure now might be be a good idea to explain my absence over the last few months. As many of you may be aware, I am unemployed and therefore struggling to come up with the funds to add/maintain features such as picture posting, to the site. I wish I had the money to maintain the feature but alas I cannot. It is possible to post pictures within your posts via a third party website but this is outside the scope of this post to explain how this is to be achieved. I trust someone will post details on how this is done if asked. I am extremely happy to see that you have kept the forum ticking over by your continued presence and I wish I had the enthusiasm you have all shown in the time this forum has been running. I am truly sorry I haven't had the time or the patience to monitor and/or maintain the forum. I initially set this site up for all those I thought might be without a forum to voice their opinions upon the collapse of www.treasurehunt.org and I hope you can continue to support it with the same ideals as it was begun. This was never intended to be MY forum. I will return sporadically to check on things but my finances restrict my ability to improve the services offered here. I apologise profusely and promise that if circumstances change in the future I will improve the site to the best of my ability. Thank you all for sticking with the site, especially Beale for administrating and Rebel for his ceaseless posts and everyone else, you know who you are!! Thank you all for your continued support. Rockhound, (Gordon)

WildCard, you miss my point I think... While I may not understand your approach, I still respect it! When I say "Anyway...I'll be watching with interest for any replies to this thread!" I mean it! I may not be in a position to understand or relate to the approach you recommend but I'll surely take notice if it bears fruit! I can't say fairer than that can I?
I have absolutely NO intention of deleting your membership whether you want me to or not! Please take no notice of my comments, my opinions regarding the Beale Ciphers have virtually no relevance!
You are welcome to post your comments here regardless.

I don't know what to say WC! I am far from qualified to reply in any enlightened fashion to your comments. My Knee-jerk reaction is that I find your analysis to be contrived and outlandish. What do I know though, huh? Anyway...I'll be watching with interest for any replies to this thread!

Hi Wild Card, As my interest in Beale stems more from the codes themselves than the story behind them, I can't comment on your findings but what really intrigues me is how you came to link all of those texts together. What I mean to say is, did you simply come across each of those books independently in the normal way, ie, you saw a book you fancied and read it, or did you seek them out with the preconceived notion that they might be involved in the Beale mystery somehow? It seems unlikely to me that you would just happen accross the very texts you needed to solve the riddle simply by coincidence. I just had to ask!
Also, I note that although you have joined the forum as a member, your last 2 posts were made as a guest, so I guess you didn't sign in before posting. I would recommend signing in because any Tom, Dick or Harry could sign themselves as "Wild Card" and pass themselves off as you, which I'm sure you'll agree would be a bad thing! If you can't remember your password let me know via email and I'll set you up with a new one!
Finally, If you truly have solved the Beale mystery then worry ye not, I for one won't hate you, I'll simply demand (respectfully) that you display your solution here for all to see, in this forum, so that I can say from that day forward... "This was the forum that announced to the world that the Beale codes were finally cracked!" Or are you planning to write a book?

I'm happy to see that we have another new member, and this time from the webs premier (or should that be "only") website devoted to the connection between Poe and Beale! Anyway, welcome to the site!

Much has been said about Poe's involvement in the Beale mystery but what do you think? Is there any compelling evidence? Do you have anything of import to add to the debate? Yes? Then this is the forum for you!

Hi Justone, welcome to the forum. Actually you got lucky today because I'm rarely online these days (no net at home and my monitor blew up, literally, a week ago) so well done ! Anywa, my best advice would be to check out www.Mindat.org and if you don't find anything there yourself, leave a message in the Mindat forum. The regulars are extremely knowledgeable and helpful so I'm confident someone there will be able to point you in the right direction. At the very least you'll be impressed with the quantity and quality of info you'll find on minerals and rockhounding. Best of luck and KOR (Keep on Rocking) Rockster

Ok, there's some good new and some bad to this question. It appears that many of you would like the ability to post photo's along with your texts. Firstly the good news: ;D Yes it's possible in two ways. The bad news: One method is a bit tricky and requires the use of another website to store your photos and a little know-how to post them here. The other method is simple, being just another function of the forum, however it costs $2 per month to have the facility activated by proboards! Unfortunately I am not able at the moment to transfer funds to Proboards online but as soon as I can I'll try to make the facility active. I'll let you know when I've done it. It would take too long to explain here how to post pics using the first method but just let me say that it is cumbersome and time consuming. It is also, in my opinion, a little unfair on those who are not confident using their computers for anything more than communicating. In the meantime, more information on the subject can be found by Googling "image hosting". I hope this is of help to you all, and maybe I'll catch you in the Chatroom sometime. Rockster

What books, websites, videos etc would you recommend? I think it would be helpful to compile a list of some kind.
(It is also a sneaky way to publicise your own efforts if you have written a book or built a website for example)
Actually, websites are best posted in the Links section, nevertheless, books in particular would be of interest to newbies and old hands alike.
What do you think? Is "Gold in the Blue Ridge; The True Story of the Beale Treasure" - by Pauline B. Innis, for example, a must-have?
How about a review of your favourite book/website?
Personally, I discovered the Beale saga in Paul Hoffman's "Archimedes' Revenge: the joys and perils of mathematics." The book itself doesn't deal specifically with treasure hunting (except in the chapter on Beale) but it is a fantastic read. After all, the way he presented the story of Beale and the attempts to decode the papers was rivetting and here I am now, some 6 years later with a forum dedicated to treasure hunting. Need I say more?
