Yes, welcome. Welcome also to other members, seajay007. FInd something of interest jump right on in and post. We all have our favorite subjects, we all learn as we go. It is best to post, post and then see what others think on the subject at hand. That's why we post to learn. Even with posters that we don't see eye to eye yet we can learn from their post sometimes. Have at it.

Hey, is this where I get to ask a question? I'm new to boards and am feeling my way around. I have a question about a 'rock' that a friend of mine tried burning in his woodstove thinking it was a chunk of coal. I went to see him and picked up a piece of this mysterious stuff. While contemplating what?... I figured.......Webb brouse and so here I am. The piece I picked up started out black and once placed into high heat after glowing red for a while turned grey according to Morris (my friend). I took a pic of it and I could post it if I could figure out how... Hey maybe its a Meterorite. Anyway, maybe one of yous rockhounds could shed some light on what I don't know. I hope so. I`d be glad to reciprocate with something I know about. My field is Mechanical Design Engineering...I`m always open to `good`ideas. Thanks Happycammel Merry Christmas

By you thinking it was a piece of coal, I would have to say it was a piece of "coke" This sometimes gets mixed up with coal. I am guessing of course because I have not seen what you have. "Coke" is made for high heat, it is used in the smelting of steel. They sometimes ship it by the railroad car load just like coal and sometimes a few pieces get mixed up. At least that is my thoughts. There are also different kinds of coal, bituminous and antracite. The latter is hard coal and it also could burn red and then turn grey. I have mostly seen "coke" do this, it will burn red and then turn a grey or white hot. If the coal is slick and shiny it is hard coal or antracite coal, if it is light and porous then it is "coke." I hope this helps.
Welcome, happycammel and post more often. Myself I was born in the hills of WVa, we burned a lot of coal there not much wood except in the cook stove. I use to go to the "bone dumps" and dig out coal with my dad, those were the worse of days and the best of days.
Everyone have a Merry Christmas and a most Prosperous and Happy New Year, 2009. Albert
