Hi, my name is Suzan, and I am new to this site, along with rockhounding. I didn'tknow there was one mainsite for the holy blue agate. I know of the Ellensburg blue, which I spent some time last summer hunting to no avail, but I sure found some beauties. (Heck, they are just about all beauties!) back to my question..what state are you in, or is the mail holly blue agate in? I live in Oregon, and have started my rock quest, traveling where I can camp, look for rocks, and enjoy the outdoors in the pacific northwest...and the southwest when I can get there! Did you have a picture to go along with the post? I thought there was one,but I am not able to get it.

I nknow this is an old post but here is my 2 cents worth on Ellensburg blue- don't get suckered in. If you go to Ellensburg they will tell you the only place it can be found is on some ranchers property and you have to pay him. Wrong!
EB is believed to have traveled to its current locations by glacial and erosion. So the fact they say it is only in this guys fenced pature is absolutely wrong. I could go into a major dissertation on this but don't have time.
I have found excellent pieces of "EB" around the area of redtop and the area surrounding this guys ranch.
Also, EB' value and what exactly constitutes an EB is widely debated. The people of Ellensburg will tell you if its not frmm this guys ranch then it is not EB- wrong again. This is how they maintain the elusive nature of EB and the price high.

Hi Badger, Thanks for that info, and I totally agree. I always think that way when there is just ONE specific place mentioned to find whatever. I always find creeks, etc. and take a break with my dog, wade in the water, ..and I have never gone back to the car with less than an armful! I find many different beauties, rarely more than one or two of what I went for, but always fun. Since my last post, I went again, and visited some friends there. The man was a hunter and took me in his 4x4 in the hills. We found crystals, and something that could be blue, but more of a carcoal blue. I will try to post a pic if you are even interested. My friends live on the southern part of town...and found an ellensburg blue in the gravel behind their home. I have not been on forums to talk about things that I really like, so this could be wonderful for me....if anyone will listen and share rock stuff. PS if you from the Ellensburg area, I just want to tell you that i think it is beautiful around there and CleElum.

Sorry to hear the Holy blue site has been closed. Love the rock.
I hunted Ellensburg blue many times. Found some on Red top in very small noduals. Dug a lot in the Thorp Dig. Hunted below the power lines at the mouth of the Green canyon. I understand EB agate is found in the top 6 inches of the soil. A large amount may have originated near the Green canyon but not above the power line. Possible when this was all in a Lake, that Ice had formed near the banks and froze into the soil, then in the spring the ice pack floated out onto the lake and dropred Blues wherever. The wind seemed to be more Westerly then than now. 12,000 years has created gullys and some sliding in the gully slopes which might be taken into account.

Hi Albert,
Do you do silver smithing? My folks used to know an Albert in that area and I'd sure like to get my rings fixed! marcie@peak.org

Is Holley blue agate a rare rock? I thought it was from a volcano. I just got one at a convention I was at.

Hi Marebear, Holley blue agate is not currently considered to be rare, but it will be since the mine near Sweet Home, Oregon has been closed to digging since 1997.

I just returned from looking for Holley Blue along the Calapooia River. I found a few small chunks in the gravel beds. I was wondering if there is one place along the Calapooia that is best for finding Holley Blues.
