How about telling us a little about yourself? How you got into treasure hunting etc, nothing too personal of course. Just a little background to give us some idea of where you're coming from. I'd go first, but... well... I like to retain an air of mystery, plus, you have to have something to look forward to don't you?

"Hello, my name is" Suzan, I am a retired school teacher, and I got interested in rockhounding when I retired, and thought I would learn some about the "pretty rocks" that the kids would bring me. I had no idea that there was so much information, so many different kinds of rocks and minerals, gems, fossils, etc. to find!!!! I have collected rocks from the southwest, the Cascade Mountains from southern California to the northwest part of Washington. It is wonderful..I guess I didn't learn more about geology in school because it wasn't interesting-THEN. I am glad to find this site to talk with others who are also learning, or can help me in this area. A friend of mine recently got a metal detector and it is a new field for him too, so this site will also provide him with information...guess he better get a computer first! I hope that there are others here from the northwest so we can trade "secret" info on rock hunting places. I am here to learn, chat, share, and enjoy. I came across this site because I was looking up info for rockhounds. More later....and I did leave alot of things out so the mystery will remain! hahhahahhhaa aha

Hi Suzan, Unfortunately this area of the site has not been as popular as I'd hoped but don't be too discouraged, I have an alternative, at least until help arrives in the form of busloads of geeky internet rockhounds like myself that is! Here is the forum/website I use for all my rockhounding needs. www.mindat.org/forum.phpIf anyone can help you then the community that's built up there over the years can I'm sure. My guess is that once you've tasted the delights to be found in Mindat you won't ever go anywhere else. And no, I'm not exaggerating, it's just that good. I also highly recommend the chatroom. I may even meet you there on occasion. Glad to have you aboard Suzan. Rockster

I would consider myself to be a treasure hunter, locating many types of items in and above ground. If "Dumpster Diving" could be considered "treasure hunting" I would probably fit in, However I do get calls from close family members and friends of friends asking me to help them identify some minerals or stones they have located in their yard. Most of the time they have run over the stones while cutting the lawn.
I do not have a degree in geology or anything else for that matter. I offer what I can, when I can to those I feel I can. I am amazed at the looks people give me when I try to explain some of the stones they have in their possession.
For instance, my Sister in-law (In The Mountains of North Carolina) has a very big deposit of Unikite in the field behind her home. Because I told it was "unikite" she feels she is sitting on a gold mine.
I must warn everyone, rockhounding is a hobby and often it is very difficult to sell something you have found, let alone "make money" doing this hobby. If this is something you feel you like to do, make sure you understand it will become a labor of love and not much of a money maker in the end.
Do not get me wrong here, There are some that have become lucky to some extent. Finding that perfect stone, gem or mineral can change ones view on this type of hobby. Most of these minerals can be easily obtainable if you know where to look.
My personal collection is not what I would call, "museum quality" but at least I found it. Some have even given me parts of their collections as payment for my identification services. Matter of fact I have plans to head to North Carolina This summer to attend an event there, where I have been asked to help others experience mineral, gem, crystal and stone collecting.
