I have been looking for anyplace in Lancaster County, PA or surrounding counties to search for minerals/rocks/gems. I got interested in this a few years ago during a visit to North and South Carolina. I have a bit of gold that I panned from Thermal City (actually sitting in the creek with a bucket, shovel, screens, etc. Since then, I've found numerous garnets, rubies, sapphires, and other materials. Still, I'd like to be able to continue my hobby here at home. Any help? Thanks.

Hi Michele, I don't personally have the information you require but I know a site that does! www.mindat.orgYou could try searching there (search boxes are at the foot of the main page) for your location but if you can't find anything then I recommend you visit their forum. It's a very friendly place with extremely helpful and knowledgeable regulars. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for there. Good luck, Rockster.

Hi Mark, You might like to try this link> www.mindat.org/loc-22087.htmlIt'll give you an idea of the kinds of rocks found in your location and the surrounding areas. I'd also recommend you check out the Message Board on that site, particularly the Identity Help section, for more specific assistance. The natives are extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to help. If you can't find anyone there to help you I'll be very surprised! Best of luck, Rockhound

I have a subscription to Rock And Gem Magazine. Every month they offer an article on mining locations. Most of the time the article pertain to panning for gold or simple "road cuts". I have learn there are allot of road cuts in PA and OH. But times are getting risky. If you wanted to stop at a newly cut area, some persons driving by would simply assume your out to do harm to the area and report you to the police. Its getting harder for the average "non licensed" rockhound to search for stones. Here is my offering to this subject: Rock Collecting SitesAlthough this list isn't very complete, it can help you get started.
