My 11 year old is very interested in mineral hunting. We live in Florida. I realize we will have to travel for some good rock hounding, but I think we could make a small vacation of it. Anyone out there have suggestions. I know there is some stuff in Georgia and the Carolinas, but those look like you are generally looking through a bucket of gravel that you purchase from a large tourist operation. That might work for one day, but we would also want something less comercial. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Fossils are also of interest. Thanks.

Gem Mountain in Spruce Pine, North Carolina has an Aquamarine mine not far from the shops location. Different times of the year, they gather up a group or offer you passage into their mining areas. As stated here. Also Hiddenite Gem Mine has information pertaining to your question. For more of a true "digging" experience, (when the time is right) try Herkimer Diamond Mine in upper NY state. I am sure there are many other places like these gem mines, but half the fun of getting there is exploring.

In Florida there are some places you can go to find fossils. Rucks pit is one. Fossilized oysters if I remember dorrectly. You can also do a google search for fossil trips in FLorida. I know there is a company that you can pay to be guided to places to search in the local rivers. There are a couple of places in Georgia. The Lagrange crystal mine and Hogg Mine both located in Lagrange, Ga. Visit this site to see when a group is allowed to go there www.dixieeuhedrals.net/wordpress/index.phpThere is also the JXR amethyst mine in Tignall , Ga. Graves mounatin in Washington, Ga. is another place. However they now only allow groups to come to their location. They no longer allow individuals. I hope this helps. Todd
