Hey i live in Northern California and i found some rocks, i have been told by some local gem stores that they are jelly opals, or possibly some other type. Here are some pictures of a few of them, if you cant see them that well please post and tell me. Please leave me some comments if you have any knowledge about rocks and might know what these are.

Hey, thanks for replying. I took the opals to a gem guy today and he told me that they arnt worth much beacuse they dont have play of color. Which i can understand in a way since they dont look like the opals everyone has with the greens and blues, but i think they look pretty cool, and it would seem like there would be lots of other people that would be interested in cutting a stone like this. Have you ever heard of people buying jelly opals?

Yo! I talked to David. owner & gem(s) cutter of a Rock Shop outside of Lynchburg, Virginia (EAST Coast... U R on the WEST Coast...); he said that U have to ask yourself THREE questions... 1) Do I want the Stone cut/mounted for ME? 2) Do I want to have it cut/mounted to sell to someone else? 3) Do I want the BEST part of the stone to sell to someone else? He explained that IF the stone has impurities... the BEST part of the stone is done... REST, is thrown away... So! Get several reviews of that stone of yours (in your area); decide what you want to do... IF, it has LOTS of impurities... the BEST part MAY end up being SMALL... it is your decision...

Hi, I don't know what to do with them, but I just wanted to say i am new to this, and I have never seen or even heard of a jelly opal. Interesting. It would be fun to figure out if they were found nearby, or the same longtude, same mountain range, whatever else you do to narrow it down and figure out where other spots might be. I went opal hunting too. Actually, we had to detour, so went by the virgin valley. It seems to me that if there are opals in "them thar' hills" that they ought to also be in other places nearby. Just my thought, and I am learning with every mistake I make! I did luck out and with preserverence I found some pretty good specimins. One, is beautiful..but I really would like a ring out of the white opal with fire. It is my favorite. Too bad I didn't find any of that. BUT...this is one. If I can post a pic. I will try. Whooooa, bet I am off the subject by now.

Keep looking! Often where jelly opals occur there are other type as well. Fire opal - Precious opal could occur where you got those jellies! The later types are rarer and thus more valuable, and harder to find. Good Luck
