Yo! ;D Hi, Ho, Silver!! It is BRRRRy cold out there BUT! BEST time of the year to hike "areas" of interest, take "pics" of INTERESTING sites, and plan for CLOSER investigation in early March, 2008. The "old" roads (ie. TURNPIKES now known as (nka) "Fire Roads") are prominent now, with the leaves down & all, to get out & "go"! Wear "blaze orange", tho... CRAZY hunters may be looking for RUDOLPH... (Singing) "Hiking along... singing a song... walking in the winter wonder land..." HA!

Yo! ;D Reading SWIFT'S SILVER MINES AND RELATED APPALACHIAN TREASURES by Michael S. Steely, p.57 has MAP of "The area of the famous Lost Silver Mines of Appalachia...", which covers the Shenandoah Valley, Roanoke Valley, Beale Treasure "area", Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, Thomas Jefferson National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway... NOT SW Virginia; GET THOSE MD'S "fired up" guys & gals!!! I DID fall into a hole near Peaks of Otter, once... DANG!!! Do you have the copy of Michael Steely's new book? It has a picture of a solid silver spearhead he found on Pine Mountain. Mike does a lot of searching for the Swift Silver Mines. Like others and because of geographical conditions of Kentucky, I believe that the Swift Silver Mines are on the Red Bird River. I may be wrong but everything points in that direction for the rich mines.

Yo! ;D yep beale, I do... I found a QUARTZ "pointer rock" like that in "old" Moneta (Bedford County, Va.); it DID point to an "X" on a boulder along a creek... posted about this on a previous "thread". It DOES look like a "spear head" BUT! doesn't have the "base/tie-on piece" of the "head"...
