I am 67 years old, retired, and my wife and I are cruising the USA in a 40 foot diesel pusher. Living our dream so to speak.
I recently became interested in rock hounding, after we visited Quartsite Arizona gem show.
What equipment do I need to get started? I am sure a tumbler would be part of the inventory.
I don;t want to spend a lot... just enough to get the essentials of what I would need. My wife and I figure since we are constantly traveling all over the USA, rockhounding would be a natural pastime for us to engage in.
Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

Smokey,
I would like to help you out but I know nothing of rock hounding. I would like to get into that sort of thing myself. If anyone out there can help smokey---------please post the information.
I am sure you will need a good small sharp pick with a hammer on the opposite end. Also as you stated a "tumbler" to polish and clean the stones. Even with a "tumbler" you will need instructions for the "ingredients" such as sand, pebbles, detergents, chemicals to polish and clean the stones to make them presentable to make into jewelry.
Myself, I would like to get into prospecting, anyone out there do this or have ideas and what is needed or any books that may help on the subject. Thanks.
