I am not a rock or gem collector so I have no idea what this is. Quick serach on google seems to turn up very little in the way of pictures of raw gems. It caught my eye because it seems to be a glob of hundreds of very small pieces of clear, yellowish or purple colored quartz. Hard to see in this poor image but if you look along the top you see those very small inclusions I'm talking about. Looks like the entire thing is comprised of hundreds or thousands of these little pieces. At widest point is about 1 inch across. Any ideas? newfind,
I am not a rock expert but the stone looks like a sandstone conglomerate of some sort. Mostly comprised of silicates of sand is my guess?

thanks...I should have something about how hard it is. A sharp file won' scratch it and I havent hit with a sledge hammer or anything...but a few good whacks with a hammer while holding in my palm did not crack it. I thought it might be some unique type of quartz? Sandstone would crumble or chip right?

The pic isn't clear enough to allow a definate identification, but it is definately some sort of a conglomeration.

I agree, although the pic seems to focus more on the background than the sample it does appear to be a grossular garnet (to my eye at least). You may want to head over to Mindat.org and check out the forum there, where you'll find a more dedicated group of people who will take great pleasure in helping you with your ID. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I'm new to the forum so first off, hi to all. Second I thought I'd look at the pics since I've seen garnet before and always interested in seeing new rocks. It doesn't look like grossular garnet to me. Seems too rounded off with no faces which is an indicator of garnet as far as I know. It could just be a quartz conglomeration. That's my guess but I'm a novice rockhound.
