My boyfriend would like a GPS for his birthday, we do some ametuer rock hunting, we have geological maps with coordinates on it, I was looking for a reccomendation on what type of GPS would be good for this type of hobbie, he mentioned the brand Garmin, but there are SO many different types or Garmins! Any help would be apprecieated!

Hi Jessie, I too am a rockhound (no prizes for guessing that one huh?) and own an old Magellan Blazer GPS unit which is good enough for my needs, no onscreen maps or anything fancy like that, but it's around 10 yrs old now so I can't say what might be on the market at the moment as I haven't bothered checking for some time. However, as you mention Garmin, as I recall, the brand took over as market leader over Magellan some years ago. I'd recommend researching basic units online bearing in mind that price doesn't necessarily equal quality. Quite often a "cheap and nasty" unit can be just as useful as an expensive gadget with tons of extra features he'll probably never use. Check out some online stores as quite often there are comments/reviews included to help you in your choice.
I hope that helps.
Best of luck with the rockhunting. KOR (keep on Rocking)

Personally I agree with you RH, but I would recommend not permanently affixing or mounting a GPS in your vehicle at all times. They offer hand held devices now, with surprising results for screen images and accuracy. I too am planing on getting a gps, but mainly for camping purposes.
