President Jefferson Davis' original plans while fleeing southward was to join up with General Kirby Smith in Texas. He believed he could continue the war from there with his combined forces forever. The Yankees had all river crossings, ports, road intersections and raillines watched intently on capturing President Davis, mostly the Army of General James Wilson and Upton. Yankee officer Yeoman had several of his men marching with Jefferson Davis troops, trying to find an opportunity to capture the President all along the way. But, they never got the chance. They did however send several messages back to Augusta to General Wilson's headquarters. Colonel Harden was sent out to capture Jefferson Davis when Wilson received word that the President had left Washington, Georgia. They knew he could not go by rail towards Atlanta, the only other option was to go south or southeast towards Milleageville the Capitol of Georgia by way of Park's Ferry. At Park's Ferry Micajah Clark and company went down the east side of the river and buried what gold remained of the CSA Treasury about $100,000 in gold, keeping only about $16,000 to $20,000 British Gold Soveriegns for expense money. This remaining money they dispersed in Gainesville, Florida near Senator Yulee's Cottonwood Plantation. Jefferson Davis also had other options with blockade runners standing by and smaller boats along rivers and inlets all up and down the coast of Georgia and Florida. He planned on using that route if necessary should the route overland become impossible. The CSA Arrow was waiting at Pinckneyville, SC on the Broad River in South Carolina but it got there three days after President Davis had already passed by there. On these boats and ships President Davis hoped to get to Texas or Nassau or to Liverpool England. He had no initial intention of going to Mexico. However he did later after leaving Washington, Georgia send out his lady top CIA Agent, Janie Adams to Mexico and she disappeared in Mexico, the Pinkerton's could find no trace of her after years of searching. She was from Raliegh, North Carolina. Her and her father worked as CSA Spies sometimes acting as USA Spies. Sorry, I talk to much. But anyway Rebel that was Jefferson Davis' intentions of fleeing south. When he left Richmond, he planned to get General Lee, Beaugard and Johnston to join forces, whip Yankee General Sherman; turn North and defeat General Grant from the Defenses he had been placing in Danville for three years. Sorry, again.
I have researched and wrote about the CSA Treasury so much, I sometimes get carried away. All of this is in my CD Books, "Lost Treasury Gold, Confederate States of America, Volume 1, and Confederate Treasure in Danville, The ADDENDUM."
The story "Park's Ferry Gold" is in my CD Book, "Tales of Treasure"
Also, I must add here, most will say this is not true, but it is. President Jefferson Davis corresponded with all his generals especially Robert E. Lee for over three years about what they should do, should they have to abandon Richmond as the CSA Capitol. The fleeing from Richmond, although forced by General Grant and his Brigider Generals at Petersburg and Five Forks, was a well planned execution. General Beaugard and his troops had marched out of Richmond months earlier to re-enforce General Joseph Johnston in North Carolina. Beaugard's Troops marched out of Richmond for 22 and 1/2 hours filling the streets from one side to the other. Their combined forces were to soundly whip General Sherman while General Lee held General Grant at bay, then the combined forces of Beaugard and Johnston were to come back to Richmond by City Point Railroad and crush General Grant. Other plans were in place should they have to flee Richmond for Danville but once they left Danville on April 10, 1865 they were fleeing from capture especially after the armistice treaty fell through while they were in Charlotte, North Carolina.

;D THANKS, beale... didn't know all that, and WILL get yer CSA CD's, too. Did you know that Robert E. Lee and his daughter climbed Sharp Top of the "Peaks", and then visited REL's old buddy, P. Buford? There was a "connection", I think...

I knew General Robert E. Lee had visited Paschal Buford's after the war ended. I did not know he and his daughter had climbed Sharp Top Mountain? Amazing how things in life work out. General Andrew Lewis also died at Buford's, was buried there, and then removed to a family location. Paschal was a right interesting individual as was his father, Henry.

;D YEP! REL & his daughter, Miss Mildred, did it in 1867; info taken from THE PEAKS OF OTTER: LIFE & TIMES by Peter Viemeister (PV) ;D, pg. 113 - 115. MAY be in yer local library... REL died in 1870, & was buried in Lexington, Va., as well as Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. YOU knew that already, I know. INTERESTINGLY, there is that VMI "connection" (AGAIN!) , and SOMETHING about being buried BEHIND THE STONE WALL! And they DID look for the "BT" BEHIND THE STONE WALL of the Old City Cementery, and I have the NA newspaper "cut-out"; gotta go find the place in OCC, based on that "pic".

Same thing I am running into on my research, rebel. Everyone seems to have a connection with VMI and the freemasons. I found a father, son and grandson all masons and all connected to the Beale Treasure.
The Robert Morris that was Mayor of Lynchburg you think maybe he could be the tavern keeper, Robert Morriss' father? Just thought I would throw that in there. We know from old newspapers that a Robert Morriss was an "INN KEEPER" at the Arlington, the Washington and at his home. Could he be the son of Mayor Robert Morris and that Robert Morris could be the son of Robert Morris the signer of the DOI.
If you could get into the City Council Minutes you may find some of this information. You could also look into the "Order Books" and tax records. There is so much information missing out of this story and it don't seem it can be found. I could not find the marriage record of Robert Morriss and Sarah Mitchell in Loudoun County records. Does this prove the Beale Treasure story was fabricated in 1883-------don't rightly know? Pleas help rebel we need answers, there is just too many questions.
rebel, can you verify by Robert Morris' headstone in the OCC that he died in 1822? Need photograph if true?

;D I plan to do all that, beale... I have researched Robert MORRIS (MAYOR), and ALL I can find from books, etc. is that his body is buried at OCC; will find his "headstone" (if there), and then, take 2 'pics" (one for you). THEN, I will try to "track" down his descendants (IF... he had "kids", EVEN if, he wasn't married... "rough & tumble days, they were... on the wild frontier & river... HA!). I DO know that "council minutes" are a "matter of public records", and SHOULD be easy to find... HOWEVER, I think the FLOOD after the Civil War, MAY have destroyed some of these "notes"... will see. I DO NOT think the BEALE story was "made up"... I DO think, that in 1885, it could have been used as a "cover" story for something... DUNNO.
