i would like to know how to identify rough gems, which are gem quality. i was in western n.c. during summer and picked up an assortment of dirt bags to take home and sift through. i know what some gems look like in the rough but i don't know how to tell gem quality from specimine due to possible fractures which if i read right some gems are treated with heat. i would like to know more about this and i can only find books that show you what polished, cut gems, and some rough gems look like. on some mine sites i can see what rough gems look like but theydon't tell you how to distinguish between gem quality and other.

marinedad, I wish I could help you out but I know less about gems than you do. I usually search for the gems that have already been cut and placed into treasure chests. Maybe someone with more experience will reply to your post or give you a website to google to find what you are looking for?

marinedad,
Western North Carolina is one of the best areas for finding gems, gold and silver. There are several gem mines down this way where you can pan, sift and keep what you find. I heard of one diamond mine, a black fellow I forget his name, he has dredged and panned there for years. I think he has found over three hundred diamonds, some very large, one I remember was worth over $30,000. Maybe you could visit these sites to pan and talk to the people that run them and they can help you greatly in what to look for and how to grade gems? Good luck to you in whatever you choose. Thanks.
