This was found in the ground in Murrieta California. I just can't find anything on this Rock. looks like Quartz of some kind but I am a novice Rockhound and may not be looking in the right place for the info www.flickr.com/photos/socalwoodworker/?saved=1If there are any questions I will do my best to answer Thank you for any help

It looks like the quartz we have here in Virginia. The red in some of them looks like an outcrop of iron. I would definitely do some digging in the area to see if you can find a solid vein of quartz. Deeper in the ground you may find some with gold flakes in them. Good luck.

Thanks Beale...These were found in a field behind my house...they are all over the place. Your saying if I dig in the field I could find Quartz Crystals? also tomorrow I will post a pic of the area they were found. Thank you for the help this hole site is great. any other good rockhounding forums? Peace Don

Hi everyone...I've been Google'in rockhound forums but i'm not finding much. They are either not active anymore or there is just noone posting to them. So does anyone have other places a Newbie like me can go for more info. This site is GREAT but i just want more to read. Also...the other pics I promiced will be up tonight Thanks again everyone

It's quartz which has been permeated by iron. It's very common. Quartz is predominant in the Earth's crust. Unfortunately, finding that material does mean that you are likely to find quartz crystals.
