I just heard about the Beale mystery from a BBC radio documentary on codes and code breaking. It's certainly a fascinating story and the posts in this forum are quite interesting (and controversial!).
What interests me is the method many of you here undergo, for example, in looking things up, doing research, figuring things out. For example, say you heard or read about the Beale mystery, what steps did you take thereafter? I think that's as interesting to know about as actual solutions or debunking. Thank you!

Well when I first heard about the Beale Treasure on the TV show Unsolved Mysteries many years ago I was intrigued. A summer or two later, I found Peter Viemeister's book in a library. I Read through it and began to try deciphering various documents using the same "book code" method that was used on Cipher #2.
After many years away from the Beale Mystery, I became interested in it again. A few summers ago, I went to the library and read quite a few books on cryptography. The Codebreakers by David Kahn is an excellent book.
After that I began to try different techniques to break the codes. Unfortunately I have not had much luck.
It can be a time consuming hobby, and frustrating at times. But it can be rewarding in the fact that you get to learn about alot of things you might not have. You certainly get to learn about our country's history as you do research. And it's a great mental activity, that is alot better for you than just watching TV or going on the internet.

Thanks for the reply. Is it a very solitary activity? And does it require a love for Math? I'm terrible with numbers and kind of in awe at people who can get absorbed in crunching numbers~!

Yo! Rebel here: Ha! Ha! Ha! LGA! U all have fallen for a GOOD one! James B. Ward was a member of FreeMason Lodge in Fincastle, Va. and was probably another name used by Col. Jesse James, CSA in 1865... THINK... T. "JESSE" BEALE... He later became a Outlaw... (but then... U all knew THAT) married and living in LIBERTY, MO. During Civil War... wasn't Bedford, Va. named LIBERTY, Va.? The pp loved him and the Gang... read THAT story... also... Some Lawmen respected him and did not bother him, much in da end... was there a FreeMasonic connection? THINK! Dose of u, who r Masons... like I... review rituals, again... Long live da KGC!

Rebel, Your information about Jesse James may be an accurate assumption about the Beale Treasure.
James B. Ward was a paymaster for the army in St. Louis, Mo. Liberty, Missouri and Liberty, Virginia seems to coincide. You may be on the right tract. I myself am in pursuit of several KGC caches.
A member of the Jesse James gang searched years and years for the cache, today known as the Beale Treasure. He road with the James gang and may have been the scout that led them to Huntington, West Virginia to rob a train there. He was familar with the area and the region. Buck Wright was his name. He camped in the Blue Ridge just East of Buchannon, Virginia, near Bobblet's Gap. A lady in Buchannon has a photograph of him with his burro and mining tools. He got his supplies from Buchannon.
Pauline Innis' husband, Walter, Admiral in the United States Navy searched with him along with Toler Ranson. These three men searched the area East of Buchannon, Virginia and West of Walnut Grove Church in the North Goose Creek area. This was years before the release and publication of "Gold in the Blue Ridge," by Pauline and Walter Innis in the early 1960's.
Rebel, do you have the service record of Jesse James during the War of the Rebellion. I would like to know the unit he served with. When General Hunter was forced back through Liberty by General Jubal Early they crossed at Bobblet's Gap. At least several members of the Yankee Army did. The main body went and set up signal towers on the ridges or mounds of ridges over looking Buford's Tavern. Buford's Gap is at the tavern and not four miles west as most treasure hunters believe.
Keep up the good work, Rebel. You have my attention.

Yo! Rebel here: tjb... u r correct... unfortunately... CSA war records were burned in Richmond, Va... when it fell... so, can't give u "paper trail"... all I remember was that Jesse was Colonel... more clues... Jesse was "swarthy" and handsome... so was Beale... Jesse was a young one. just getting started after 1865... loved da challenge of robbing banks, etc... think da feds wanted him just because he was an outlaw? THINK! Former CSA Col.; private man... etc... James B. Ward (Jesse) could use Beale story as "cover-up" with lots of dead Rebels buried in Lynchburg, Va... I also heard they buried caches in graves... "No One would bother the "dead"... Lawd Gawd A'Mighty! Long live KGC! ;D

Thomas "Jesse" Beale; THINK Jesse James, FRANK James as "Buck" W.T. Wright of upper Goose Creek Valley. ;D It is UNCANNY how Frank and "Buck" look SO much alike! JJ was a GUERRILLA in the "free" state of Missouri, with "headquarters" there and St. Loo. LATER, after the "Confederate War" (CW) REBELS joined with KGC/OAK to "hide" Rebel "assets" & Rebel treasury in diverse places. Jesse & Frank... whether of the JAMES clan OR DALTON clan had MANY kin in Bedford County, Va. Legends of the county indicates BOTH "boys" spent time "here" and knew the area WELL!

Howdy Gents
I thought id tell you a story that i know to be true .

One afternoon two men rode up to the GIVENS farm and ask if the could bed down in the barn as they were travel weary sothe kind GIVENS family said that they had and extra bedroom and that would be more fitten for them ,
In the morning when Mrs Givens came to the bedroom to offer them breakfast the 2 men were gone but she found on the pillow a HUNDRED dollar bill and wrote on it was compliments of Frank and Jesse James.
another story about Jesse is that he was really John D Rockefeller and you can get the rest of that story by goggling FBI Jesse James Two young boys had a picture of Jesse and claimed JDR was JJames cause JDR appeared in new york with lots of cash and no past records of any kind at that time. the FBI squelched the story.
And He Robbed the Huntington BANK ON HIS BIRTH DAY IN 1875
He was in jail with a man named WARD his step dad (SAMUELS) used news papers for them to pass coded messages as he was a printer Jesse Also had another friend that was an editor he also had a friend that was a PRINTERS DEVIL Jesse's Mother lost her hand in a grenade explosion at her home Jesse married his cousin ZERELDAhe called her and another family member by the name of ZEE. NOW THIS BUFORD is not BUFORD it is B. FORD (THINK ) **u** will minus U and BEAL WAS THE CAMEL JOCKEY EF B ***Esteemed Friend*** or Edward Fitzgerald Beale he had 31 camels (friends) journeyed to go get them journeying to this place CAMEL =evening MEAL minus C. U U is a W. now back to Jesse Frank and Jessie went mining but decided it was easier to rob miner. maybe they used camels to pack the loot ? Dunno! BUFORD'S COLORADO is near where BOB FORD was shot in a tavern that dirty Coward that shot Mr. Howard.(song)
most of the names in the code have just one initial and name
