I'm new and so excited to find this forum. I've always loved rocks & minerals. I used to drive my mom crazy when I would throw all of my shoes on the floor and fill all the shelves in the closet with my most treasured rocks haha I let my love die a bit over the years but it was recently renewed when I came upon a stash of rocks. A store owner was getting rid of them....he asked for pennies in exchange because he was always running out of them. I asked how he came into everything and he said a rockhound had collected everything from the 40's-60's and died. His family dumped it off at a school that didn't want it. The owners wife worked there and brought em all home and there they sat in boxes until now. I've invested in 2 books to hopefully help with identifying some of the stuff (my kids school is lacking in this stuff, thought it might be useful to put them a little "kit" together for when the kids study rocks & minerals) but of course there are some things I can't figure out. If anyone is bored and wants to help I'd be happy in snapping a few photos

Why do you use the handle of oneblessedmess. I think rock and mineral collecting is great. I don't know much about it but I admire people that do it. When I was going to school, I had stones and minerals about 24 each glued onto cardboard. These were bought but they sure helped to identify rocks and minerals. I don't even know if they are made or sold anymore. You may want to check into those racks, they could save you a lot of time identifying what you have. You can also get rock and mineral books that have test for scratching and displacement test in water, color test and other ways of finding out what you have. Good luck. Albert
