A member of the Jacob Fowler Expedition, Eli Ward. Does anyone know who he was? Was he any relation to James Beverly Ward? albert_hunter@yahoo.com

rebel,
I have read Jacob Fowler's Journal a couple of times. I sent Peter the quotes you have posted. There are others. I particularly like the quote in Jacob Fowler's Journal on his return trip sometime around the 4th of July, 1822 where he is going through a burned out area trying to find some wagon tracks. One must remember that Becknell and party had not taken the wagons to Sante Fe at that time. The wagon tracks Jacob Fowler was looking for were made by the wagons of Thomas J. Beale, when he passed through there in the Winter of 1821 on his journey to Virginia to make his second deposit of treasure. Good luck to all and keep diggin rebel. It is right interesting so far.

Yo! Rebel here: ;D Yeah... that particular area was given to the Pawnee Indians, and they were VERY protective of their "space"... VERY, VERY dangerous area for beale and Companions to be in...

rebel,
In TJB's own letters to Robert Morriss, he said they were in a perilous enterprise. So he knew the dangers. They were working with thousands of Indians gathering the gold they carried back to Virginia.
