Don't mean to butt in but i've had thoughts that the loot came from the East instead of the West. Just the thing about transporting that much weight across rugged terrain leaving six inch deep wagon tracks that would catch any outlaw or Indian's eye with half a brain seems strange. But if the gold was "really" found out west i guess thats the only route. But if it was pirate plunder or whatever coming in at Norfolk and floated down the James to say Coleman Falls then transported inland that's a whole different ballgame! I think Mel Hodgen had this idea in his book also naming Laffite as the culprit. The story could be a cover-up but the ciphers could still be authentic. Guess we'll know when we know. The gold rush was in Georgia in 1820 so theres another wild idea, but probably even a worse transportation problem.

Yo! Rebel here: ;D KyDave, if it is pirate(s) treasure from Georgia... all u have to do is sail up the coast to the James at the Bay... then come up-river (walking around the "Falls" at Richmond), then sail further up the James River to Coleman Falls, etc. etc. OR... just "off-load" the treasure in Richmond, Va. and take "wagons" on the old roads to Bedford County, Va. SEE?
