Yo! Rebel here: ;D NAO, U think we have "idle spectulation(s)"? HA! HA! HA! THAT from an Aussie? HA! Beale & I are NOT idle here in Bedford County... there is NO speculation going on... I read and listen to the pp from Bedford County here... Beale has done much MORE, previously in terms of hiking the area... Peter Viewmeister has written books... idle, indeed! Unsubstantiated (ooh... BIG word...) rubbish? Is that "Trash-talking"? What da bloody hell, do U want? All U got are the Beale Codes? At least Mr. Mason has been to this area, years ago... and I would like to see more... otherwise, as a psychologist once said... there could be a smell of "Anal Retentives" in here...

The only connection I could ever find was being with the man named Buck Wright. He lived as a hermit on top of the Blue Ridge Parkway overlooking Buchannon, Virginia. I know a little about the area you are speaking of and have been there before. It is spelled Buchanan. If you draw a 4 mile circle from the Buford's site it goes into Botetourt County which is where Buchanan is. The opposite side of the mountain from Bedford and Montvale. There was a book written about Buchanan and it had a story about this mountain man you speak of. I'll see if I can find it someplace.

I'm looking through that book now. There's a section on the Beale family of Buchanan starting in the 1600's and a picture of the Beale home named "Tressilia". ca. 1890.

Also mentions that a John Beale was Sheriff of Botetourt County in the 1790's.

Looks like the section on Buck Wright contains only a news clipping (4 paragraphs) about his death. You may have already seen this. There is a picture of him.

The article is dated Jan. 21 (no indication of a year). It states he died near Lowry in Bedford County while visiting his son and daughter there. It states he lived in a cabin near Buchanan just inside Bedford County and was 92 at the time of his death. It also mentions the story you do about a doctor reporting that he had many scars. It says he came to Botetourt about 45 years prior to his death and that he claims to have been a sharpshooter in the Confederate Army from Tenn. It states that he told some people that his name was Younger. It says that he wore a Masonic emblem and claimed to have been a Freemason.
Here's the best part:
"As far as known, Wright never told anything about his former life or about why he came to Virginia, except to relate about his services in the Confederate army, and that he had been a distiller, and told several friends about being in several desperate fights. The aged man followed the occupation of a day laborer, working on farms and public works. He was quite a pictuesque figure, being tall and of large frame with long beard and hair. He continued to work until the past year, although a sufferer of rhematism. It is reported that he had told his friends that he expected to write a book of his life and have it published after his death."
I remember seeing an old cabin up there someplace as a kid. I could never find it again, but it was all broken down and really just a hole in the ground with some rotted out logs laying around.

Yo! Rebel here: ;D mc25a, that is VERY good info... more than I have... I think Buck was a Sentinel for KGC checking on the B.T. as Beale reported in his "post"... it is REALLY important to try to remember where the cabin was... and Beale needs to get his detector up there with U... Buck probably hid ALL kinds of stuff up there... and if U can find out where he is buried... LAWD GAWD A'MIGHTY! Send in the Treasure Hunter's "Specials"... way to go!!!
